Building your personal brand in the world of Social Media

make-a-personal-brand-of-yourself

Before the Internet, Google search, Facebook and other social media platforms existed, first impressions were generally made face-to-face. The only information you would know about the person(s) you were meeting was from a resume if it was an interview candidate or information from acquaintances, friends, colleagues etc. That is not the case anymore. With the social media craze, information such as your appearance, likes/dislikes, interests, work history, and places you have ‘checked-in’ to can all be found out before someone even meets you.

With that in mind, filtering what you put on social media is more important now than ever when information is at the fingertips of everyone globally – including potential employers. Today, employers leverage social media sites when looking for future employees to join their organization. Everything from a Google search, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn is fair game and provides a lot of information about you if you have been actively posting on social media.

Here are a few tips on how to create your brand and presence through social media:

  1. Define your objective
    • What do you want others to see when they come across your profile on a social platform, what do you represent and what are you trying to convey?
  2. Create posts that reflect who you are and the objective you are trying to achieve
    • If you are into fitness and creating a healthy lifestyle, show that in your posts through positive posts about health and wellness, being active, workouts and sharing recipes. Avoid posting pictures of yourself eating junk food on a daily basis, consuming alcohol on the daily or anything else that would otherwise indicate that health and wellness is not important to you.
    • Here’s a rule of thumb: If you will regret it, don’t post it. If you don’t want your parents/children/future or current partner seeing it, don’t post it.
  3. Be consistent across all social media platforms
    • Everything you post on your social media platforms should be consistent and reflective of who you are and what your objective is. Whether it is a twitter post or  you are sharing an article on LinkedIn, the image and message you portray should be consistent. This allows your ‘followers’ and potential followers to feel confident in your brand and what you represent. A consistent look and feel on all platforms strengthens your personal brand.
  4. Showcase your skills and expertise
    • With social media at our fingertips, we now have access to a global audience so take advantage of that. If you are a photographer and are just getting started, showcase your pictures on social media platforms and highlight what makes you different than your competition. If you’re a website guru, your posts should showcase your work and include testimonials from clients. Show the world what you can do for them – you and your social media platforms are free advertising reaching a global audience.
  5. BE ACTIVE!
    • By being active on social media on a consistent basis increases your visibility and online presence. You want to make an impact in your communities and be seen as an expert in your niche – whether that is a fitness coach, content creator, event planner or an entrepreneur. Contributing to and engaging in discussion shows that you are knowledgable, you care about the topic and want to be involved. This just strengthens your credibility and others confidence in viewing you as a go-to expert.

Now, take a look at your social media profiles and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Am I consistent across all platforms?
  2. Do my social media profiles reflect who I am?
  3. Am I proud of the brand I have created?

If you answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, take some time to look at each of your profiles and work on it so it reflects what you want others to see when they come across your profile!
