Change – whether it is small or big can be a hard thing to adapt to because we are so comfortable with having things the way they are. But, change can be a good thing and that is something I realized when I made the choice to leave a company I had been working with for 12 years to join a small management consulting firm. This was one of the hardest decisions I made and it took a lot of pro/con lists, endless conversations with friends and family and many sleepless nights where I would lay awake contemplating if I was doing the right thing. So, how did I finally make the decision to leave everything I knew and was so comfortable with? By looking at this as a new opportunity – an opportunity to learn, to grow personally and professionally, and the chance to overcome new challenges and obstacles while expanding my professional network.
Starting with a new company is not easy to do; especially when you don’t know anyone, don’t know the business and you’re basically starting from scratch and have to prove yourself all over again. I didn’t realize how much there is for me to still learn and grow my skills and only after taking the leap of faith and risking it did I come to know this – otherwise I was always going to be comfortable where I was doing what I was doing.
It’s been three months now and so far the journey has been amazing. Was a slow start but I’m getting my feet wet and the client’s I get to work with are amazing – and I can see that I am only going to learn and move forwards; versus the fear I had that I was moving backwards. The opportunities for me here are endless and being part of a new team gives me the chance to see my contributions that will help our company grow. I enrolled in a course as well since learning never stops in a world that is rapidly changing because of technology and social media. I need to stay educated and up-to-date on what’s happening in the communications and digital space so I can offer my clients the best advice and recommendations for their business. There is so much going on in my life to be excited about and I am enjoying every minute of this journey.
My advice for anyone who is tired of their 9-5 job, looking for a career change or is finally ready to pursue their dreams and goals is to just take the leap of faith and go for it. What do you really have to lose? I know that if this doesn’t work out for me, there will be something else out there. Just believe in yourself and take that risk because the last thing you want is to wake up wishing you had started yesterday!
If you need some help with those pro/con lists, you can always give me a shout – I’ve become an expert at those! Now go take a chance and make your dreams come true by changing something you have gotten too comfortable with!
